Charming, frightening, challenging
Even in a world of blue hedgehogs and Italian plumbers, Ecco stood out as one of the more unlikely video game heroes, but a hero he really was.
This is a game character you really could care about. A bottlenose dolphin! The game atmosphere enhanced by beautiful effects, ambient music and the dolphins song.
Ecco has lost all his family after a freak whirlpool of water and air tore the life from his home. Now he has to search for clues to find his way back to his family and return them to the bay.
Gameplay wise, Ecco’s song formed a key part of the gameplay. Using his song, Ecco interacts with other sea creatures and with objects, blocking or unblocking paths in the game. But also in a lovely touch, prolong Ecco’s song and the sonic pulse returns giving you a map of the area you are in.
Playing Ecco, tension remains with you throughout. You just don’t want him to die. Fighting enemies such as sharks and octapodes using sonic blasts or butting enemies away but always having to keep an eye on the air limit, searching out air pockets or returning to the surface being key to Ecco’s health… more so as later levels force you to take Ecco ever deeper.
But also, joyously speeding up and bursting through the surface of the water to perform back flips and summersaults, just cause you can!
