At its heart, Grand Ages of Rome is a city builder Firstly, you select what family you want to use for your campaigns and you reap the benefits as you continue to complete more missions. On the campaign map you can select and play through scenarios in a non-linear fashion and you can always opt to ignore the campaign and select to just build a city free from objective restraints. The general motivation for any of the houses you select to play as will be to secure your families rightful place in Rome by gaining favour with unwashed masses.
There are the building blocks for you to move forward with, slaves need to be bought to get cracking on getting your cities up and running, education is pivotal to improving your options and all this requires food and plenty of it, so farming is another aspect you need to focus on.
On the military side of the Grand Ages it is a case of recruiting your army and training it up to be able to defend your empire from those who would seek to choke of your trade routes and starving your burgeoning empire form invasion by unruly barbarians!
All in all it Grand Ages of Rome offers classic RTS action on the military side of the game combined with city building. A slow paced and thoughtful game and we managed to get through all this without reference to Rome not being built in a day. Oops
