Pyro the creators of the Commando series of games really did a job on taking a blend of real-time strategy, squad tactics and stealth and putting it together in a game world that works on a level that has rarely been matched.
With an isometric perspective, split screen cameras to keep tabs on your Troop of Commandos and maps that are beautifully drawn with striking attention to detail and variation from start to finish, this is a game that challenges you to plan and execute your tactics with absolute precision.
Your Commandos (six of them) have differing attributes and attitudes and you will grow to love them as individuals as you deploy them to deadly effect. Romping or rather “stealthing” through North Africa, Norway and Eastern Europe each mission you undertake is challenging to say the least, but also, importantly – different.
You really have to pay attention to what the enemy is up to and figure out how to sneak your team through to the objective and there is the joyful payoff of having your demolitions expert lay waste to enemy vehicles and bases, let alone the sense of satisfaction as your hard as nails Green Beret gets his knife out to dispatch another hapless sentry.
There are over 20 missions to take on and there is always more than one way of achieving success. This gives a real sense of satisfaction when you plan out and execute a mission. It’s an open game, there is no linear progression in the game, no scripted events, and all your Commandos act according to their abilities. Some paths might be more difficult than others so only by maximising all of your Troops abilities will you be have a chance of coming out of this alive.
